New Delhi. In its June report, the International Grains Council (IGC) had projected global rice production for the 2026-27 marketing season at 545 million tonnes; however, in its July report, this figure was revised downwards by 2 million tonnes to 543 million tonnes. Slight reductions have been made to rice production estimates for the US and certain Asian countries.
On the other hand, the IGC has raised its forecast for global rice consumption by 1 million tonnes, setting it at 544 million tonnes. Demand and consumption of rice are expected to rise in Asia and Africa.
Global rice trade (imports and exports) for the 2026-27 marketing season is projected at 62 million tonnes, remaining unchanged from the June estimate. Global rice ending stocks for the 2026-27 season are expected to stand at 195 million tonnes, which is 4 million tonnes lower than the June forecast of 199 million tonnes.
The IGC has estimated global rice production for the 2025-26 season at 546 million tonnes. All eyes are on the monsoon in India, as rice production will largely depend on its rainfall.
