September Dry Spell Threatens Kashmir's Saffron Crop

Srinagar. Temperatures in Kashmir are running above normal, and a lack of rainfall has become a cause for concern. The flowering phase of the saffron crop is about to begin, and the current weather conditions are worrying farmers. Typically, saffron plants begin to flower in October.

Growers state that the saffron crop is entering a critical stage requiring favorable weather; the month of September often determines whether farmers' hopes are realized or dashed. During the hot season, the plants often remain dormant, but they grow rapidly after receiving monsoon rains, eventually producing flowers by October.

Adequate soil moisture is essential in saffron fields during the flowering stage, alongside normal temperature levels. However, the current month has seen a lack of rainfall and high temperatures in major producing areas—conditions that are unfavorable for the crop. Nevertheless, the situation has not yet become dire; if there is good rainfall in the coming days, the crop's condition will improve, raising hopes for higher production.
