Argentina Becomes India's Top Supplier of Edible Oils

Mumbai: Argentina, located in Latin America, has now become the largest exporter of edible oils to India, while Malaysia has moved up to the second spot, overtaking Indonesia. Russia and Brazil retain the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, among the countries exporting edible oils to India.

Data compiled by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) reveals that India imported approximately 13.62 million tonnes (136.20 lakh tonnes) of edible oil during the ten-month period from November 2025 to August 2026. This volume included imports of 94,000 tonnes of RBD Palmolein, 6.422 million tonnes of Crude Palm Oil, 18,000 tonnes of Crude Palm Kernel Oil, 4.03 million tonnes of Crude Soybean Oil, 532,000 tonnes of Refined Soybean Oil, 2.481 million tonnes of Crude Sunflower Oil, 34,000 tonnes of Refined Sunflower Oil, and just over 9,000 tonnes of Crude Rapeseed Oil, along with other oils.

During the period under review, India imported 3.059 million tonnes of edible oil from Argentina, 2.621 million tonnes from Malaysia, 2.568 million tonnes from Indonesia, 1.268 million tonnes from Russia, and 1.089 million tonnes from Brazil.

These five countries were the sources of edible oil imports exceeding 1 million tonnes each. Additionally, during the same ten-month period (November 2025 – August 2026), imports included 735,000 tonnes from Thailand, 599,000 tonnes from Nepal, 360,000 tonnes from Ukraine, 304,000 tonnes from China, 5,000 tonnes from the United Arab Emirates, and 1.053 million tonnes from other countries across the globe.

Palm oil was primarily imported from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, while crude soybean oil was sourced from Argentina, Brazil, and China, and crude sunflower oil from Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina. Refined edible oils were imported on a large scale from Nepal, and rapeseed oil was imported from the UAE.
